Four books I've read #PostHurricaneMaria that you will love
3:14 PM
I’ve
always have loved reading books. Ever since I was in high school, books have
been a great part of me growing up.
After
Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico isn’t the same. We do not have electricity; we
don’t even know when it will be back. Our ways of entertainment on the island
are very limited. We (my family and I) even try to go to the mall, to the
movies, but it is so crowded, we can’t really hang out much. But, even though
this is happening, I can say that during this crisis, books have been able to
save me.
During
this time, I’ve read 4 books so far! A new record! I’m so happy, that I have
continued purchasing books. This not only helps me practice my reading, but it
also maintains my mental health stable. So if you are looking for books to buy
online or in a local bookstore, I recommend the following!
Rupi
Kaur’s Milk & Honey:
This
has been one of my favorite poem books of all time. Kaur’s short poems are
meaningful and most of all, powerful. Her book is full of poems that reflect on
very important topic like life, feminism, love and pain. Every word of her
poems gets through to you and you can feel her emotions at 100%. It is a very
real and very emotive reading. You can read from time to time this book and
feel like there is a perfect poem for every situation in your life. It is a
book every one should read.
Carrie
Fisher’s The Princess Diarist:
This
is weird to say, or maybe not really, but somehow I feel connected to Carrie
Fisher ever since I saw the Star Wars prequels for the first time. Carrie is
one of my biggest idols and after reading The Princess Diarist, I feel like I
can relate to her in so many ways. This book is intimate, these are some of
Carrie’s most dear thoughts and memories in her life and she decided to share
them with her dear readers. From her affair with Harrison Ford to her journal
entries from the most important time during her role as Leia Organa in these
epic films of all times, Carrie Fisher speaks from her heart. We also can taste
a bit of her perspective in the life of a celebrity, and how she felt being
treated as Leia, but not as Carrie, herself. A book I truly hold dear to me and
sparked my interest in reading more of Fisher’s writing.
Mindy
Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?:
The
Office is my favorite television show of all time. Mindy Kaling is one the
writers of the show and she also acts and plays the role of Kelly Kapoor in the
series. How cool is she? Well, you can sit back and read one of the funniest
books I’ve ever read in my entire life. She gets real about her struggles in
becoming a comedy writer and she also writes anecdotes of her life as a
celebrity. Me as a reader could relate to so many things she went through, but
also I confirmed what a cool human being Mindy is through her book. I 100%
recommend this book and it is one of my favorites.
Rainbow
Rowell’s Fangirl:
Rainbow Rowell has become one of my new favorite book
authors. This book is very different than what I expected. I didn't know that it had topics like mental health and anxiety, which is what Rowell really dives into in Cath's character. It is a story of coming of age and first-love. A feel good story with very unique characters facing adulthood. Cath is someone who cannot let go of her Simon Snow and her very popular fanfiction story, Carry On even though she is starting college. But because of her fanfiction, she is a brilliant writer and it helps her go through some of the challenges she had to face. I loved the book and I hope you do too.
Next in my reading list:
Hope you find my list of recommendations helpful and certainly excited for these new books to read! If you are a book nerd like me, I will also leave a list of the other books I bought and will review soon (if you want of course)
- To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
- Rupi Kaur's The Sun and Her Flowers
- Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
- the princess saves herself in this one by Amanda Lovelace
Happy Book Reading!
Love, Racheliz
